Jack Griffith Chaney, aka Jack London (took his step-father’s surname), was born on January 12, 1876 in San Francisco, California. He was an American author, journalist and social activist. He started writing when he was 17. He joined a writing contest with the suggestion of his mother and won the first prize. This contest encouraged him to dedicate his life to writing his short stories. At first, he could not find a willing publisher for his works. He enrolled at the University of California in Berkeley but did not finish it. In 1899, he began publishing his short stories in the Overland Monthly. To write regularly helps him gain so much experience and he had a great chance to practise to write daily. At least a thousand words a day. His novel The Call of the Wild (1903) brought him fame and some fortune at the age of 27. And he published more than 50 books over the last 16 years of his life. Some of his famous works are Martin Eden, The Star Rover, The Call of the Wild and White Fang. He was a pioneer in the genre which would later be known as science-fiction. He was also a socialist and animal activist. He witnessed animal cruelty in training of circus animals and that lead him to write his novels Jerry of Islands and Michael, Brother of Jerry to inform people about cruelty to circus animals. In 1918, the Jack London club was created to encourage people to protest for animal rights. He died of kidney disease in 1916 .
